Timeless: Minimal Seascapes
My aim with the "Timeless: Minimal Seascapes" project is to convey peaceful, calm energy through showcasing the stripped-back, minimal beauty of the horizon at sea, often at sunset and almost always composed using the rule of thirds, with different combinations of light, clouds and water. These are photographs, created utilising both long exposure and the enhanced smoothing effect offered by the addition of a panning motion. The intentional movement accentuates the speed at which the natural conditions pass, the photograph freezes the moment and editing provides further enhancement. The final product is an abstract, minimal, peaceful blur of colour, often considered to be reminiscent of Mark Rothko's (1903-1970) Color Field paintings.
I see parallels between the beautiful but fleeting natural conditions I capture in these pictures and the fleeting time span of many beautiful events and moments in our lives. To reflect that connection, these pieces have all been given names relating to the passing or recording of time and are unconventionally presented in portrait format to further enhance the effect of only seeing part of the beautiful moment as it slips past.
I find the visits to the beach to take the photographs, the editing process and the resulting art incredibly calming and cathartic. I hope this peaceful, calm, healing energy is both evident and enjoyable to those who view my work.
